Commonly asked questions about Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery during consultation:
Is laparoscopy a major surgery? Will it be painful?
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery, not a major open surgery. We make 2 or 3 small cuts (around 0.5 to 1 cm) on your abdomen. Because of this, pain is much less compared to open surgery, and recovery is faster. You may have mild discomfort for 1–2 days, which we will manage with pain medicine.
How many days of rest or hospital stay is needed?
Most patients stay in the hospital for 1 day or less, and go home the next morning. You may need 3–5 days of rest at home, and then can slowly return to normal activities. Full recovery usually takes about 7 to 10 days depending on the procedure.
Can I eat normally after laparoscopy?
On the day of surgery, we usually start with liquids. From the next day, you can have normal homecooked food. Avoid spicy, oily, or heavy meals for 1–2 days. Drink plenty of water and include fiber rich foods to avoid gas and constipation.
Will I have stitches or scars after laparoscopy?
You will have 2–3 tiny stitches, usually hidden in the belly button or below your underwear line. The scars are very small and fade over time. We use absorbable stitches, so they usually don’t need to be removed.
Is laparoscopy safe for fertility or future pregnancy?
Yes, in fact, laparoscopy is often done to help women become pregnant, especially in cases of PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, or blocked tubes. It is a safe procedure that does not harm the uterus or ovaries when done correctly.Causes include: Uterine fibroids, Adenomyosis, Endometrial polyps, Hormonal imbalances, Bleeding disorders, Thyroid dysfunction
What is robotic surgery? Is a robot doing the operation?
Robotic surgery means that the surgeon controls robotic arms using a special console. It is not automatic — the robot doesn’t work on its own. The doctor performs the surgery with high precision, using 3D vision and fine movements. The robot just helps the surgeon, like a highly advanced tool.
Is robotic surgery safer than normal surgery?
Yes, in many cases, robotic surgery is very safe and accurate, especially for delicate operations. It causes less bleeding, smaller cuts, less pain, and helps you recover faster. It also reduces the risk of some complications compared to traditional open surgery or even laparoscopy.
Will it cost more? Is it covered by insurance?
Yes, robotic surgery may cost more because of the advanced equipment and technology involved. However, many insurance companies do cover it, especially if the procedure is medically necessary. We will help you check your insurance eligibility and explain the cost clearly before the surgery.
Can I get pregnant or have children after robotic surgery?
Yes, robotic surgery is often used to improve fertility, such as in fibroid removal, endometriosis treatment, or tubal surgeries. It is very safe for the uterus and ovaries, and does not affect your ability to have children later.
How soon can I go home after robotic surgery?
Most patients can go home within 24–48 hours, depending on the type of surgery. Recovery is faster than open surgery, and you can return to your normal routine in 1–2 weeks, with only a few precautions. We will give you full instructions after surgery.
